Contributor Dave has some commentary to go along with the pictures he took while visiting the NHRA Supernationals recently at lovely Englishtown, NJ. Enjoy the photos and words! There is nothing like seeing these machines rocket to 300+ mph in only a few seconds.
Right at launch. Left lane is the future Top Fuel winner of the day, Spencer Massey. Check out the chassis torque shown by the slight drop on the left side of both wings. They twist one way in front of the engine, opposite behind. Massey’s ahead by a few hundreths at best. Brandon Bernstein is in the right lane. Massey won with a 3.825/319.90 to BB’s losing 3.845/319.29. Helluva drag race. The day was filled with runs like that. There was a Pro Stock run between Vincent Nobile (6.568/210.87) and Jason Line (6.568/210.67), look closely there! They ran the exact same time out to the thousandth of a sec.. Win was on a 4/1000 hole shot and 2/100 speed diff..
This is an amazing photo although it does not look so on the surface. This is round 3 semi-final elimination between Ron Capps NAPA car and the days eventual winner, one of the trio of cars fielded by John Force, Mike Neff. Notice that Capps has hit the throttle and Neff is sleeping, haha. The reaction times were .082 for Capps and .096 for Neff. That’s a hole shot by Capps of .014, 14 thousandths of a second!!! This shot is in that gap! I cut a light between the 2 of them!!! Neff drove around that hole shot (haha again) and took the win by less than 1/10 of a sec..
Half track at E-town. It’s actually a babies ass smooth concrete surface to about 1,000 ft.. The dark shiney surface is from the track prep. They use a resin called VHT Trackbite at all NHRA events in an attemp to equalize different lanes and locations. Super sticky shit, you’ll lose yur flip-flops.
The depths of hell in the nitro pits, warm up after the rebuild. My favorite place at a National event. The wind was in my face, only lasted about 20 seconds. Waiting for that glorious throttle hit! It’s like standing next to a concussion grenade. Wish I knew what was spraying (nitro leak?) in the center of the pic. I can’t believe these guys can take this without masks. Hard core.
Thanks for reading!
Occasional contributor Nik sends us this strange video of a gentleman who has memorized the revs, shift points and sound an F1 car makes during the course of a hot lap. Of course he’s got a blog you can check out here
The 2011 Canadian Grand Prix was an eventful one! Without posting any spoilers, the start is interesting, a long delay, and finally an incredible finish. Great race all around. Definitely should watch.
